National Walking Summit – Day 1 Wrap-up

Wow. Brenda Havens (that’s me!) of Walk Urban Indy received a scholarship to attend the FIRST EVER National Walking Summit in Washington D.C.. The conference kicked off at noon today with registration and a meet and greet followed by break-out sessions and a reception.

1) “Strengthening Change in Your Community by Engaging the ‘Right’ people.” A strategic planning session, this focussed on who those people might be and how to engage them (with a small-group project to outline the process of creating a workshop). Some good facilitation advice and definitely some things I hadn’t considered. Also a chance to engage some of the other attendees.

2) I was going to attend “The Critical Role Federal Agencies Play in Creating Safe, Walkable Communities,” but the representatives of Federal Agencies were unable to attend due to the shut-down. Luckily, my second choice, “Walkable Commercial Districts: Economic Case and Design Principles turned out to be really fascinating. I’m ready to join initiatives to set up Main Streets across Indy!

Some of the important tips while using Eriacta cialis in österreich are the following:1.Those willing to use the drug should be prohibited in case our body is discovered to be allergic in regarding to the active drug ingredient. For example you want to buy a medicine for cost of viagra pills erectile dysfunction. All animals are thermally symmetrical, so deviation from this indicates altered physiological processes which overlay the site of an injury cost low viagra or disease. Then the doctor will examine the arm and hand to find out which nerve is compressed and mouthsofthesouth.com get viagra where it is compressed. 3) The third session of the day was absolutely amazing. “Why Walking is Medicine” by Robert Sallis, MD of Kaiser Permanente was exactly what coming to this conference was about for me. I’m told his presentation will be on-line and I will definitely be linking to it. I took copious notes but I found myself wishing that everyone I have spoken with about walking for the last three months could have attended. It was that good.

This evening’s reception at Kaiser’s Center for Total Health was a wonderful example of what you can do when you are committed to health. All of the food set out was healthy alternatives. No red meat, lots of roasted and fresh veggies. Some salmon/sushi. Hummus and pita. a vegetable/cider soup. Fresh fruits – blackberries, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Nuts, and a wine/chocolate pairing. Very well done.

Also attending the reception was the current Surgeon General of the United States, Regina Benjamin, MD. It is very inspiring to know how seriously walking is being taken and it is amazing to learn about initiatives in other cities. I’m going to be coming back very energized so watch out, Indy!
