Saving the Ash Trees

We were out walking the Historic Watson Park 1a route this morning in preparation for tomorrow’s big Launch Event (see earlier post) and came across Jerome Delbridge of Tree-Centric Solutions treating the two ash trees in McCord Park to protect them from the Emerald Ash Borer. A private donation from Dave Forsell, who lives in the neighborhood, will give the trees two-years of protection.

Jerome took a few minutes to educate us on protecting ash trees. The cost to protect the trees every two years, even if you had to do it for the next FORTY years (hopefully not) would be about the same as the cost to have the tree removed if it was attacked and died. They are really hoping to only have to do it a few times as ash borers will pick an area clean and then move on to another area.

A little later, I ran into Andrew Hart of KIB (also a neighbor) and Don Miller, Land Stewardship Manager for the Department of Public Works at the Bird Preserve (they have a crew clearing out the invasive honeysuckle). There are twenty-one dead or dying ash trees in the Bird Preserve.

Jerome does this part time; he also is an arborist for KIB. Please see his website for more info.
